Steak Grilling Guide

Here at Eat Oregon First, we love a summer meal right off the grill. However, we also know that grilling can be somewhat intimidating to the newbie. Never fear--here's an easy step-by-step guide to the perfect steak. Of course, for best results, we recommend a delicious Laney Family Farms steak from The Meating Place or Block and Board. Get out there and get grillin', amigos.

First, remove steaks from fridge 1 hour prior to grilling. After the hour, lightly coat entire steak with high-quality olive oil.

Combine to taste: white pepper, garlic powder, sea salt and onion powder. Lightly dust both sides of steak and allow seasoning 20 minutes to emulsify in previously applied olive oil.

Heat grill to hot. Sear top, bottom and sides of steak for 2 minutes each. Adjust grill to medium and cook over medium heat to desired temperature.

Rest steak off grill under aluminum foil for 10 minutes.

Serve and enjoy!

Confused about rare, medium or well-done? You can tell how done a steak is by the color of juice it weeps while grilling:

Red–Rare
Pink–Medium
Clear–Well-Done

Remember, a steak continues to cook while resting, so it’s best to pull it off the grill a bit before it reaches your desired temperature. For example, if you want a medium-rare steak, remove it from heat when the juice begins to just turn from red to pink.
